The Garlands in Wivenhoe

The Garland family are recent residents of Wivenhoe. From about 1877 Charles Garland lived in Camberwell, South London. His son Herbert stayed close by and lived in Dulwich where his son Basil was born and educated. On his return from Gibraltar in 1948, Basil, now married to Dora Hope, moved to Dulwich Common and Terry was brought up in Dulwich. In 1975 the family (Basil, Dora and Terry) moved to Dedham on the Essex/Suffolk border. Terry married Pam Barton in 1981 and moved to Canterbury and then Headcorn in Kent.

In December 1987 Terry, Pam and their two children (Emily and Francis) moved to Wivenhoe, to be closer to both sets of grand-parents.

Pam's father, Charles Halls Barton, died in November 1997. His memorial is in the old churchyard of Alresford. In 1998, Terry and Pam built an extension to their house, where Barbara moved to in October 1998. Barbara died 17 March 2011.

In 1999 Terry's parents also moved to Wivenhoe. Their house in Dedham had been a mile out of the village, which had limited facilities and little public transport. In Wivenhoe they were within easy walking distance of shops, buses to Colchester and the train station.

Terry's mother, Dora, died in April 2008. Her memorial is in Colchester Crematorium grounds.

Emily is now living and working in London and Francis is at Huddersfield University.
