Fenwick Department Store, Colchester High Street.
Site Architect for the demolition of the eastern section of the former Williams & Griffin store whilst the western, 1960s building remained trading. As with all sites in Colchester centre archaeology was an important element and the line of a Roman road was found following the former access road to the car showrooms that had occupied the site in the 1930s; this remains as an open area between two of the retained shopfronts. A mediaeval 'witches pot', a clay pot filled with needles was found behind a doorway of one of the old shops, used to protect the property from witches. A large section of Roman wall was discovered extending under the 1960s building - something for future generations to discover when that building is redeveloped. On the final day of their work the archaeologists lifted a timber shelf that had revealed various seeds and fruits and beneath it discovered a hoard of gold jewellery; this has now taken pride of place in Colchester Museum as the Fenwick Hoard having been donated to the Museum by the Fenwick family.
